LEEK (Allium ampeloprasum Linn)


Leek is a widely used plant belonging to the plant family Liliaceae.  It is considered a perennial, sometimes an annual and is cultivated for culinary purposes.  The stem grows from a slightly bulging bulb.  The leaves are linear, lanceolate.  On the top is the umbellate cluster of flowers, white to light-red in color.

Medicinal Use
·         Stimulate the appetite.
·         Relieves congestion in the respiratory passages.
·         Promotes the flow of urine.
·         Insect bites and stings.
·         Promotes the discharge of pus in boils.

How to use
·         The consumption of leeks stimulates the appetite and relieves congestion in the respiratory passages.
·         It is a good diuretic as it promotes the flow of urine.
·         Externally used, the leaves are applied over insect bites and stings.
·         It is also recommended for boils, to hasten the discharge of pus.

Leek is used as a vegetable and a seasoning element. It has about the same medicinal properties as garlic but to a lesser degree.
