RED SANDALWOOD (Adenanthera pavorina Linn)



Redwood or Coral wood belonging to the plant family Leguminosae is a large, erect, deciduous tree which grows to a height of 6-15 m.  The bi pinnate compound leaves are opposite, short stocked, and the pin nae are about 10 cm. long.  The pale yellow flowers are fragrant.  Pods are curved and twisted when opening.  This helps the 8-15 bright red smooth and shiny seeds in dispersal.  This tree is usually planted as a shade tree.

Medicinal Use
·         Rheumatism and gout.
·         Boils and inflammation
·         Diarrhoea and dysentery
·         Bowel movement and vomiting.
·         Infection of the eyes

How to use
·         The leaves of the coral wood are used in baths for rheumatism and gout.
·         The seeds are used by by decoction as a wash for boils and inflammation.
·         The leaves are for diarrhea and dysentery.
·         The root is used as a laxative and sometimes, to cause vomiting.
·         Decoction of the seeds is used externally for eye infections.

The root, leaves, and seeds.

Dose

10 to 15 grams for 1 litre of water.  Use 3 or 4 cups a day, or as needed, for internal use.
